My Favourite Songs EVER - Part 2

After last week’s post I have realised that no list will encompass every song that’s had an impact on me, but both of these posts have given it a good go. It’s so fun reflecting on how certain songs have come into my life and why they’ve made an impact on me. So, without further ado, here’s part two of my favourite songs ever; by no means an exhaustive list, but still a pretty darn important one for me.

Nightclub - The Vaccines

I have never disliked a single song that The Vaccines have produced, and their music has been a staple of my playlists for years. Though indeed any of their songs could make the list, honourable mentions being ‘Denial’, ‘I Always Knew’ and ‘Dream Lover’, I thought it’d be cool if I kept it #current for this one. With the new album only being released a few days ago, I am yet to fully stick my teeth into the entire track list (though seeing them play some live in HMV certainly helped - cheeky humble brag), but THIS SONG is the absolute definition of a banger. It’s snappy, so rock n roll and incredibly catchy. A true triumph. And, although it’s a new addition to my fave list - it’s set to stick around for a very long time.

Beating Around The Bush - AC/DC

Highway to Hell is by far one of my favourite rock albums of all time, as it epitomises every reason I love classic rock so much - the guitars are loud, the singing is loud, IT’S ALL BRILLIANT AND LOUD. Though again every song on this is great, ‘Beating Around the Bush’ is my favourite. The main riff in this song is brilliant and all of the talent of each member comes through. It’s an out and out tune - that’s that.

Myxamatosis - Radiohead

Coming in with their second mention so far (surprise, surprise) on my favourites list, Radiohead did it again with this banger from album Hail to the Thief. The main reason this gets such a mention is that it was absolutely brilliant live, beforehand I wasn’t too fussed. The edgy distortion and synth-like sounds added to the guitar sounds great and is far more heavy-sounding than a lot of their more chilled out tracks. I would recommend this as a staple to anyone getting into Radiohead for the first time.

Lounge Act - Nirvana

Also with their second mention is one of my all-time favourite bands. No one seems to want to admit that Nevermind is their favourite Nirvana album, and mine is genuinely the aforementioned Bleach, but there’s no arguing that this album, though more mainstream yes, is a masterpiece all the same. Nirvana have done a brilliant job here of making alternative grunge music, but still making it very accessible and catchy - ‘Lounge Act’ being a perfect example of this. It’s always my go to song when listening to this album and it’s incredibly well written and played - Kurt’s voice sounding as rough and angsty as ever.

Dani California - Red Hot Chili Peppers

The minute the opening drums come in on this song, I am content. The Chili Peppers are an iconic band for many reasons, but this song is the peak of their talent in my opinion. With an unmistakable riff, catchy lyrics, and ending in one of my all time favourite guitar solos ever - you really can’t go wrong with this tune. It’s another example of classic rock at its finest and is, in my eyes, the song that meant that the snowballing success of this band first started.

Black Shades Over Red Eyes - The Strypes

Yet another band that never fail to disappoint me is The Strypes. I’ve said before that their latest release Spitting Image was a slow burner for me, and it took a while for me to come round to really enjoying any of the songs. Because of this, it’s almost more satisfying that I now love the album - my perseverance finally payed off lol. This particular tune is now what I consider a highlight of the album, as the chorus in particular is so catchy and it never fails to have me toe-tapping. There’s not much else to say other than it’s groovy and catchy, and I’m so glad I gave the album time to grow on me.

Since I’ve Been Loving You - Led Zeppelin

Led. Zeppelin. Surely, this is possibly the most talented band in the world. The music this band made is the reason I have such a love for classic rock. I still can’t believe how talented this band is, and I still don’t believe anyone can play guitar quite like Jimmy Page can. This song is absolutely essential to my love of this band, because it proves that their rock music doesn’t always mean loud singing and crazy solos, it can be tender, meaningful and emotional. This is such a beautiful tune and proves once and for all that this band has a gift. I could get soppier and soppier about this song and Zeppelin, it means a whoooole lot to me.

Starring Role - Marina and the Diamonds

The coming of age album of our generation Electra Heart is something I would recommend any young girl to listen to. Marina, much like fellow queen Lana Del Rey, captures the innocence and angst of youth through delicate and boppy tunes that are all much too relatable. ‘Starring Role’ is the definition of an anti-love song and it’s definitely my favourite song of hers. I love Marina’s voice so much and this song exemplifies the unique style that all of her music adheres to. Female singers are few-and-far-between in mainstream alternative music unfortunately, so I wouldn’t think twice about supporting this legend.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd

The band known for songs that are epic in length; Pink Floyd. Don’t get me wrong, listening to a 25 minute song isn’t something that is typical of my usual listening patterns, but when I do listen to this song, I remember how incredible it is. Floyd are just so unique and powerful in everything they produce, and the first time I listened to this, and the namesake lyrics ‘shine on you crazy diamond’ kicked in, my jaw certainly dropped, and I knew this was a new addition to my favourites list. Epic doesn’t really cover how much time and talent certainly contributed to this song and I can only thank these musicians for creating such a thing that constantly brings me so much joy.

Man of War - Radiohead

Okay okay, I’ve spoken about this song before on my blog so I won’t go on about it too much lol. I love Radiohead and this song is the main reason why. They’ve now appeared for the third time on my fave list and I am such a huge supporter of everything they do. It’s crazy how a song can bring so much happiness to a person and there’s really no way for me to describe why. The dreamy singing, the incredible lead guitar playing, the lyrics, it’s all great, and a more than fitting end to the list of my favourite songs ever.

There we have it. I really hope you got something from this two parter, it was so fun to write. I’d love for people to leave comments about their faves, and hopefully a few of mine will make your list after this☺️

Peace n love my dudes,

H x

The People I Idolise Would Probably Hate Me

Hi guys, Sending well wishes to you all at this continually weird time. This is a pretty random post but clear evidence that my mind really be WONDERING during isolation haha. Either way, I hope this is a somewhat interesting read. I fell down a bit of a YouTube hole the other day (nothing new) of watching celebrity interviews of people I like and look up to. In doing this I had a bit of a realisation; the majority of people, specifically musicians, that I idolise and look up to, would probably want nothing to do with me. Let me explain. There is definitely a stereotype that surrounds certain musicians. Stuff like; they are unnecessarily rude, they play up to the ‘tortured artist’ personality, or they refuse to answer questions on their music - generally tutting at the mainstream media obsession with asking too many questions. I will never know how I would react to this lifestyle (the media don’t generally care too much about Theology students lol), but I’d like think that...

Couch To 5k: Becoming a Runner by the End of Lockdown

Hello friends, Today I wanted to chat about fitness. It’s often been a sore topic for me and I have never been the type of person that has particularly loved any form of working out. It has always felt like a chore and something to stress over, even if I could see benefits both mentally and physically - I just never found anything that I was actively looking forward to doing no matter what I tried. I’m sure this is a problem many of you have also experienced. One example of a failed workout endeavour was over a year ago, when I decided to start the BBC app initiative ‘Couch to 5k’, which confidently claims that if the app is followed strictly, any person of any fitness level will be capable of running a 5k (the equivalent of half an hour of movement), in 9 weeks. The app introduces running extremely slowly, the first session being only 1 minute runs with regular cool downs. It’s easy to turn your nose up at starting so small, but the app urges that completing all runs is necessary...

Live Review: Let’s Eat Grandma @ Heaven - 27/9/2018

Sweet and delicate Norwich duo Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingsworth took to a sold out show in world famous gay bar Heaven in London this week, to entertain the crowd in the only way they know how to; with poise, talent, humility and grace. With a diverse crowd of ages, gender and class in London’s Embankment area, the room waited with excited anticipation - ready for a Thursday night of epic proportions. Riding high off the success of their newest offering I’m All Ears, the pair took to the stage with an air of undeniable confidence, launching straight into popular bops ‘Whitewater’ and ‘Hot Pink’. Other than a few hellos and thank yous, both Rosa and Jenny need not say anything else to the crowd, as their music completely spoke for itself. Bustling on through the set, which consisted of mostly tracks from their newest record, with only hints of older material, the girls interchanged between playing the keyboard, guitar, and even saxophone - all played brilliantly. The duo also ...
