Life Update: Finishing Second Year, Booking My Tattoo, Getting Ready For Home

Hey gang, I hope you’ve all had a great week. I thought I’d use this week as a sort of catchup/chat with you all; this is a personal blog after all and I have to satisfy the nosy ones amongst you lol. Basically, it’s all been a bit structured recently and I just want to chat so that’s what I’m gonna do!

On the 23rd I had my last exam of second year, after a long overstretched three weeks of exhaustion and stress. Ah exam season, it really is the bloody worst time of year. Overall, my exams went well (I think), and apart from one or two curveball questions (we don’t talk about those), I feel fairly confident. If any of you have read my post about my personal experience with A Levels, you will know that even saying that I think an exam went well is a HUGE deal for me, and I’m so relieved that I’m getting better at managing my stress. Hopefully by third year, I’ll be the most zen gal during exams; one can hope lol.

On the subject of second year, I am SO relieved that it’s over. I’ve already spoken about the so-called ‘second year slump’ so do check that out if you are equally fed up of second year, you’ll probably find it very relatable. In short, my motivation has been at an all time low this year. I’m not sure if the novelty of uni has just worn off, and plus the work has obviously gotten harder, and in the case of my uni, the marking has also gotten so no-nonsense. It’s tough but we all got through it, and for those not quite finished I really sympathise and hope that you feel the huge sense of relief that I did when I finished. I thought that I couldn’t look forward to a summer more than I did during A Levels, but I can confidently say that I am going to make the absolute most of this summer with all of my lovely pals.

After enduring this year, I definitely wanted to treat myself, even though I do that anyway for no apparent reason lol. As you may have read a few posts ago, I had been thinking of getting my first tattoo, and finally, after insta polls, staring at my body in the mirror for literally hours on end, and watching endless videos and reading blogs on different people’s experiences, I finally bit the bullet this week and booked it! *screech*. I am so excited and terrified but I know I’ll love it once it’s on me. I’m getting it on the side of my ribs/next to my boob and I am definitely scared of the pain, but for something I’m going to have and hopefully love for life, I know it’ll be worth it. For those who might be in or around London and wanting a tattoo, I’ve booked into Black Garden Tattoo on Drury Lane and my artist is Deni (her Instagram is @denibalbino). If all goes to plan, my next post will be revealing the tattoo and retelling my experience as my apppointment is Wednesday! Eeeeep.

Other updates? Now that uni is over I have no excuse but to say yes to all the shifts at work that I’m offered. I have an expensive tattoo to pay off and a lot of plans for summer that aren’t gonna come cheap. Working on a donut van on the tourist-filled Southbank certainly has its ups and downs; the downs definitely being a 45 degree van with up to 5 of us in there, with customers saying “I bet it’s hot in there!” YES it is. Despite it being a hugely demanding and exhausting job, I always have a blast with my co-workers and it’s still a fun way to earn money while I’m here.

Another big thing going on in my life is, of course, planning to go home (still yet to book tickets back  even though I want to go in like a week lol oops), and I am SO excited to be back; even though I was there in April, it still feels like too long. I am planning on getting back on a Saturday purely so I can go straight out because my friends and the Liverpool nightlife are the main two things I’ve missed. Sorry mum and dad, I do miss you too lol. The fact that this summer I can flit between Liverpool and my flat in London is going to be soooo damn fun and I feel so lucky. I’m literally getting excited typing this lol, if this summer is bad I will NOT be happy, but I know neither Liverpool or London are going to disappoint this year. Bring it onnnnn.

Smaller updates include; I am going to Leeds on Thursday for my friend Anthony’s birthday, along with some of my other sixth form friends. Not only am I excited to see my friends after much time apart (I hate that they’re gonna read this...I hate you all really), but other than a few drinks with my fellow theologians after our last exam, I am yet to let my hair down and truly celebrate finishing second year what with working so much. I hear the Leeds nightlife is definitely something to behold so I’m ready to royally embarrass myself after one too many double JDs and cokes. Another small update is my now endless habit of treating myself with summer clothes which I’m trying to pretend I need. My fave is the thumbnail of this week’s blog, which is a yellow vest top with ‘it’s cool to be kind’ embroidered on the front; summery and wholesome = my mood all summer. It’s from Topshop if anyone in interested but selling out fast! I’m also really into dresses at the moment, and I got a very cute full length black dress from Bershka, one of my favourites shops, which I’m sure will appear on my insta at some point soon, as well as a spotty slip dress from Topshop which is going to be super cute for the hot weather. Basically, I’m buying lots of cute clothes right now that I can’t afford and loving life.

Life overall right now is going pretty great and although second year has been tough, the feelings of coming out the other side has been indescribable and the plans I have in the coming weeks are just so exciting. You should also stay tuned for the live review I’m planning of the Rolling Stones gig on 5th June. I still cannot believe I get to see them live and seeing glimpses of the performances so far on social media makes me certain this will be a night to remember, and something I will absolutely have to document on here.

Ok, so that’s my lil life update which was either mildly interesting if you’re nosy like me, or dull if you’re not lol. Either way, please let me know whether you like these more chatty posts once in a while, because things have been quite music heavy as of late.

I love you all and as always thank you sooo much for reading my ramblings each week, you make this weekly posting malarkey worth it.

H x

The People I Idolise Would Probably Hate Me

Hi guys, Sending well wishes to you all at this continually weird time. This is a pretty random post but clear evidence that my mind really be WONDERING during isolation haha. Either way, I hope this is a somewhat interesting read. I fell down a bit of a YouTube hole the other day (nothing new) of watching celebrity interviews of people I like and look up to. In doing this I had a bit of a realisation; the majority of people, specifically musicians, that I idolise and look up to, would probably want nothing to do with me. Let me explain. There is definitely a stereotype that surrounds certain musicians. Stuff like; they are unnecessarily rude, they play up to the ‘tortured artist’ personality, or they refuse to answer questions on their music - generally tutting at the mainstream media obsession with asking too many questions. I will never know how I would react to this lifestyle (the media don’t generally care too much about Theology students lol), but I’d like think that...

Couch To 5k: Becoming a Runner by the End of Lockdown

Hello friends, Today I wanted to chat about fitness. It’s often been a sore topic for me and I have never been the type of person that has particularly loved any form of working out. It has always felt like a chore and something to stress over, even if I could see benefits both mentally and physically - I just never found anything that I was actively looking forward to doing no matter what I tried. I’m sure this is a problem many of you have also experienced. One example of a failed workout endeavour was over a year ago, when I decided to start the BBC app initiative ‘Couch to 5k’, which confidently claims that if the app is followed strictly, any person of any fitness level will be capable of running a 5k (the equivalent of half an hour of movement), in 9 weeks. The app introduces running extremely slowly, the first session being only 1 minute runs with regular cool downs. It’s easy to turn your nose up at starting so small, but the app urges that completing all runs is necessary...

Live Review: Let’s Eat Grandma @ Heaven - 27/9/2018

Sweet and delicate Norwich duo Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingsworth took to a sold out show in world famous gay bar Heaven in London this week, to entertain the crowd in the only way they know how to; with poise, talent, humility and grace. With a diverse crowd of ages, gender and class in London’s Embankment area, the room waited with excited anticipation - ready for a Thursday night of epic proportions. Riding high off the success of their newest offering I’m All Ears, the pair took to the stage with an air of undeniable confidence, launching straight into popular bops ‘Whitewater’ and ‘Hot Pink’. Other than a few hellos and thank yous, both Rosa and Jenny need not say anything else to the crowd, as their music completely spoke for itself. Bustling on through the set, which consisted of mostly tracks from their newest record, with only hints of older material, the girls interchanged between playing the keyboard, guitar, and even saxophone - all played brilliantly. The duo also ...
