Today I Am Listening To...

Hey hey,

I’ve been listening to a lot of new music recently and had hoped this would have been a regular feature (I have only posted one of these, I flopped sorry), BUT this is the perfect time to bring it back. I have always adored music but lately I have been gaining an ever-growing appreciation for how important to me music really is and how discovering new music is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things that I can do in my spare time. So, I’m going to chat about some of my favourite songs of the moment, many of which I am listening to daily, and hope that it helps you discover some new music too - they’re all bops, I promise.

Edward 40hands ~ Mom Jeans.

Since discovering the album Best Buds by these emo cuties, I have been loving a different one from the tracklist every few days. Right now, the rather oddly named ‘Edward 40hands’, which fits pretty well in an album with other songs such as ‘*Sobs Quietly*’ and ‘Scott Pilgrim V. My Gpa’, has it all when you’re wanting a whiny, kinda sad tune with some sick guitar riffs and catchy choruses - I mean, that’s Mom Jeans. summed up really isn’t it. I have for many years dismissed whiny emo music and any singer that sounds even close to the nightmare-inducing ‘where are youuuu?’ of Blink-182’s ‘I Miss You’, but I have to say that this is the band that have began to convert me. Yes, the self-deprecating lyrics can wear thin sometimes, but with members as talented as these guys and with songs so well put together and catchy, I’ll allow myself to be ever so slightly emo-converted.

Destroyed By Hippie Powers ~ Car Seat Headrest

I can’t believe I am yet to discuss this band on my blog, but it has been kind of a whirlwind of getting into them - they have, within a few months, gone from being a band I barely knew, to undoubtedly one of my favourite of all time. I don’t really go a single day at the moment without listening to something from their consistently brilliant discography, but ‘Destroyed By Hippie Powers’ is one I constantly come back to. It’s just a brilliant song that encompasses the exact sound that is so unique to Car Seat Headrest, and it’s heavier than some of their other stuff, which is something I am always drawn too. Gimme that sweet sweet distortion fellas. Yeah, it’s great - I saw it live and wanted to weep a lil bit. Listen to this band - not one person who have listened that I know have ended up disapppointed. A voice like Will Toldeo’s, paired with his painfully relatable lyrics on the trials of youth, are too good not to listen to.

Twist ~ Naked Giants

I first discovered this band when they supported Car Seat Headrest when I saw them in November (definitely going down as one of the best gigs I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending). First and foremost, Naked Giants re-ignited my love for the sound of a Gibson SG, which they wonderfully showed off live in their tracks, and in their recordings too. ‘Twist’ in particular is a fun and carefree bop that still has a definite edge and attitude about it. With some lyrics spoken and some shouted, the guitars loud, there is a real confidence and clear talent in this band and they certianly deserve more credit. ‘Twist’ has been my go-to wake up song whilst I trudge to uni in the early morning and it certianly does the job to get me not only in a good mood, but awoken by the loud no-nonsense style of the band as well.

when the party’s over - Billie Eilish

Oh ! My ! God ! I know that this girl’s name is on everyone’s lips at the moment, and it seems that everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. I’d be lying if I said I’d been a fan from the moment her first EP was out blah blah blah, but I can certainly say, after binging all of her music like a trooper, that I fully understand the hype around this sweet and mesmerising voice. Though the more upbeat bops like ‘ocean eyes’ and ‘bellyache’ from her first EP Don’t Smile At Me, are sick and very popular for a reason, it was this emotional, slow-burning ballad that made me fall fully in love with the vision that Billie conveys with her music. A song that seems as simple as discussing falling out with someone and vowing to call them after a party, is immersed in such an emotional and desperate voice, that truly makes me ache with every listen. Billie, more than any female artist in a long while, has inspired me to want to create and put my experiences into my own music and art (not as impressively as her of course), and I have already recorded covers of a couple of her other lovely songs (shameless plug ~ https://soundcloud.com/hannah-campbell-843233726 ). She is potentially the most talented female vocalist that has come from our era in a while and this song in particular has me so excited for her upcoming album and all other future releases.

If I’m Being Honest ~ Dodie

Another female vocalist that makes me wish I had a stronger voice and an ability to create beautiful things from bad experiences is the ever so sweet Dodie Clark. With her newest EP Human only just released, Dodie is the perfect example of a YouTube musician that totally deserves to break through into mainstream music fame. All tracks on the EP tell various stories of times that she has connected feelings to just being human, and trying to realise that there is no need to feel guilty for feeling things so strongly - it’s just human. ‘If I’m Being Honest’ is definitely an example of this vision, as she sings longingly about not feeling good enough for her romantic interest, and singing self-deprecatingly about herself for feeling the way she does. It’s a brilliantly arranged song with sweet sounds of strings and piano filling each refrain, and my personal favourite part has to be Dodie’s vocal solo which reaches ranges I did not know her often quiet voice could reach - only giving me more respect for how talented she truly is.

There we have it - the music that has been the soundtrack to my life for the past month or so. Like I said, discovering new music will never not bring me the greatest amount of joy, and I am grateful to have an outlet in order to gush about how much I’m loving what I’ve been recently treating my ears to. Thanks for reading guys, see ya next week!

The People I Idolise Would Probably Hate Me

Hi guys, Sending well wishes to you all at this continually weird time. This is a pretty random post but clear evidence that my mind really be WONDERING during isolation haha. Either way, I hope this is a somewhat interesting read. I fell down a bit of a YouTube hole the other day (nothing new) of watching celebrity interviews of people I like and look up to. In doing this I had a bit of a realisation; the majority of people, specifically musicians, that I idolise and look up to, would probably want nothing to do with me. Let me explain. There is definitely a stereotype that surrounds certain musicians. Stuff like; they are unnecessarily rude, they play up to the ‘tortured artist’ personality, or they refuse to answer questions on their music - generally tutting at the mainstream media obsession with asking too many questions. I will never know how I would react to this lifestyle (the media don’t generally care too much about Theology students lol), but I’d like think that...

Couch To 5k: Becoming a Runner by the End of Lockdown

Hello friends, Today I wanted to chat about fitness. It’s often been a sore topic for me and I have never been the type of person that has particularly loved any form of working out. It has always felt like a chore and something to stress over, even if I could see benefits both mentally and physically - I just never found anything that I was actively looking forward to doing no matter what I tried. I’m sure this is a problem many of you have also experienced. One example of a failed workout endeavour was over a year ago, when I decided to start the BBC app initiative ‘Couch to 5k’, which confidently claims that if the app is followed strictly, any person of any fitness level will be capable of running a 5k (the equivalent of half an hour of movement), in 9 weeks. The app introduces running extremely slowly, the first session being only 1 minute runs with regular cool downs. It’s easy to turn your nose up at starting so small, but the app urges that completing all runs is necessary...

Live Review: Let’s Eat Grandma @ Heaven - 27/9/2018

Sweet and delicate Norwich duo Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingsworth took to a sold out show in world famous gay bar Heaven in London this week, to entertain the crowd in the only way they know how to; with poise, talent, humility and grace. With a diverse crowd of ages, gender and class in London’s Embankment area, the room waited with excited anticipation - ready for a Thursday night of epic proportions. Riding high off the success of their newest offering I’m All Ears, the pair took to the stage with an air of undeniable confidence, launching straight into popular bops ‘Whitewater’ and ‘Hot Pink’. Other than a few hellos and thank yous, both Rosa and Jenny need not say anything else to the crowd, as their music completely spoke for itself. Bustling on through the set, which consisted of mostly tracks from their newest record, with only hints of older material, the girls interchanged between playing the keyboard, guitar, and even saxophone - all played brilliantly. The duo also ...
